On a surprisingly sunny afternoon in June, some development work on OrgVue surveys led me to building the ‘Brazil 2014 Score Predictortron’. The result? A month long intra-office fight for football supremacy
In the last few months we have fundamentally changed and significantly expanded what is possible with OrgVue surveys. As part of Concentra’s employee engagement activities around the 2014 FIFA World Cup, we decided to create and run a prediction game.
What did we build?
Each user receives a personalised link via email. The sending of the emails and the generation of the links is handled by OrgVue. Opening the link takes the user to the main page:
On the main page we embedded a series of youtube videos related to each round of matches. It also allows the user to navigate to the other parts of the survey.
On the Leaderboard page we show the (dynamically calculated, ‘live’) scores of everyone participating in the competition:
And on the My Predictions page we show the results of previous matches (including how many points the user scored for that game) and drop down boxes to select the scores for coming games:
How does this demonstrate what is now possible with OrgVue surveys?
Whilst built using OrgVue’s surveying capabilities, this ‘survey’ acts as more of a mini web application: with different navigable pages, dynamic presentation dependant on factors such as the date (match predictions are not able to be edited if the link is opened after the specified kick-off time) and the ability to view data not directly connected to the current user (the leaderboard is dynamically generated from the dataset containing all other users’ predictions). All data and predictions are persisted back to an OrgVue dataset, making the full power of OrgVue available for analysis once any survey is complete.
How does this help employee engagement?
It’s desirable to run competitions and organise activities relating to major events like the World Cup, but it can take a lot of time maintaining and updating spreadsheets, and pouring over emails or pieces of paper. What we built in OrgVue was much easier to manage, as all interactions (sending out emails, receiving and analysing data from each employee, calculating scores) take place within OrgVue. Employees can access the links on their desktop or on their mobile and see both their own and their workmates scores calculated dynamically on demand. We even had one employee filling in their predictions from the top of a mountain in the Lake District using their mobile phone! Bring on the rugby world cup 2015!
